The area is 1458 km², the population of district is 41.725. Khojavend which has favorable geographic position is bordered by Aghdam, Aghjabedi, Fuzuli, Jabrail, Gubadli, Lachin, Shusha and Khojali. The toponym of Khojavend consist of 2 parts: “Khoja” and “Vend”. “Khoja” in Turkish means “teacher”. “Vend” also in Iranian language means “ generation, descent”.

Khojavend district was occupied by Armenian armed forces and their allies on October 2, 1992. As a result, 1723 houses in 10 villages where Azerbaijanis used to live were destroyed and their properties were plundered.
